Biographical and genealogical sketches, perhaps by Mrs. Arthur Pegram Scrivenor of Richmond, Va., of Edward Pegram, Jr., a captain in the Dinwiddie County, Va., militia during the Revolution; his son, Gen. John Pegram (1773-1830), commander of Virginia forces in the War of 1812; John's son, Gen. James West Pegram (1804-1842); and Robert Baker Pegram (1811-1894), an officer in the Confederate Navy.

Pegram, of Dinwiddie County, Va., spent his career in the military first in the U.S. Navy, then the Confederate Navy where he helped organize the Virginia Volunteer Navy and commanded the Nashville (cruiser) and the Richmond (ironclad). In 1853, Pegram took part in the U.S. Surveying Expedition in the North Pacific to open up trade that resulted in a treaty between the United States and Japan the following year.
